The A1(M) Motorway runs 'under' Hatfield and is the major road route to Hatfield. There are three nearby junctions on the A1(M) motorway: J2, J3 and J4.

Junction 4 of the A1(M) Motorway serves Hatfield North, Stanborough Lakes and Welwyn Garden City.

Junction 3 of the A1(M) Motorway serves Hatfield Central including the University of Hertfordshire and Sports Village.

Junction 2 of the A1(M) Motorway serves Hatfield South, Welham Green and has access to the main University Campus.

Travelling from the South, South-East and South-West of England is easiest via the M25 Motorway coming off at Junction 23, joining the A1(M) south of Hatfield.

From the North Two major routes exist:

Head South on the A1(M)....

Head South on the M1 to Junctions 7/8. These two Junctions have been reworked in recent years and swapped round with one exit to Hemel Hempstead and the A414 North Orbital Road signposted to Hatfield. NB: This stretch of the A414 used to be called the M10.

From the East three routes exist:

From Colchester follow the A120 to join the M11, coming off at Bishops Stortford and then picking the A120 up again through Hertford to Hatfield.

From the East via the A14 or A11 which merge just north of Newmarket, follow the signs for the A11 where the road splits just east of Cambridge and join the M11 south of Cambridge. Come off at Bishops Stortford and then pick the A120 up through Hertford to Hatfield.

From Kings Lyne follow the A10, joining the A14 just North of Cambridge, then turning south onto the M11. Come off at Bishops Stortford and then pick the A120 up through Hertford to Hatfield.
